inkscape question - size / cropping of saved files

how do i make the svg saved crop to the current selection... it keeps saving the whole canvas. normally i'm ok with that but it's starting to bug me...

I haven't noticed that, but then I usually start out by making the canvas the right size, and filling it with my design.

hmm well i know it is possible since i've seen it done (i sent someone an image to play with and when they sent it back it was cropped)... maybe they just resized the canvas manually... i was hoping there was a more elegant solution... :)
