I want to put 10.04 on a partition to test it before taking the plunge...

BUT

Grub 2 is going to mess up my perfectly stable and fast booting 9.04 partition isn't it?

Well yes it is, because I put 9.10 on my wife's PC and it takes twice as long to boot as 9.04 did. all to do with Grub 2 chunking away at disks for abourt 20 seconds before deciding to do anything.
Once it's booted it's fine, but I don't want to go backwards

Can anyone comment (or share experiences) on having 10.04 dual bootable with another ubuntu version?

much appreciated

Don't know about grub dual booting 9.04 & 10.04, all I can say is that grub2 in 10.04 is fast. There are other minor glitches in 10.04 but grub isn't one of them.
