Hey all,

I downloaded the Live CD version of Dapper Drake Alpha Flight 5, and I really like it - with one notable exception.

When I am using Firefox, any page that requires a Java Runtime Environment can't display its content - forcing me to try to manually install JRE, which is a dismal failure.

Does anyone know if the official release of the live CD for Dapper will have built-in JRE support for Firefox? Right now, that's the only thing that's keeping me from using Ubuntu as my default live CD (I have to use Knoppix/Kanotix instead).

Ubuntu Live CD's do have any non free packages included. JRE has never been nor ever will be added to the live cd.

Dang. That's too bad. I really enjoyed the clean layout of the Gnome desktop, and especially the speed of Firefox.

But, I have to have JRE, so I guess it's back to Kanotix.

You could always install the Blackdown Java from the repositories. What's so difficult about that?
Btw, you might also be "surprised" that Ubuntu does not have propriety codecs (mp3, wma, avi, etc) and plugins (flash, java) installed built-in, whether in Live CD or in the installer.

Can Blackdown Java do all the things that Sun's official port of Java to Linux does?

probably not ALL, since blackdown java is version 1.4, while Sun's Java is 1.5. For one, I heard Azureus needs to use 1.5 exclusively. But for your regular needs, I think Blackdown Java might be enough. The java website seems to run well using Blackdown only.

Installing Java really isn't that hard. I managed to install it on my first day using Ubuntu (which is not too long ago).
If you like I can post the method here.

Will that work during a session using the live CD?

Here's my reason for asking: the only laptop I have is one that my company has assigned me. I am not allowed to install Linux as a dual-boot OS, so my only option for using it on this laptop is as a live CD.

That being said, if there's a way to install Java just for that period of time while I am running from the CD (and a USB thumbdrive, if needed), great! If not, then I'll probably have to go back to using a distro that packages Java as part of the live CD.

Thanks for your responses...

Installing some 20+ MB over and over again would be kinda annoying...why don't you rebuild your own Ubuntu CD, then you can have all the benefits of Ubuntu+ all the lil extras you always want on your distro...

Mostly because I have no idea how to de-construct an ISO file, and re-assemble it with the JRE package included.

Are there any HOWTOs on these forums that would tell me how to do that? I think if I could re-package Dapper Alpha Flight 5 with Java/JRE support, that would do the trick for me.
