New to Ubuntu

boy, ubuntu makes me feel retarded, I downloaded the users guide... where is it? thought I would check out the free bit torrents and when I try to open them it just tells me I need to open them with something else and then gives me a pop up with a bunch of empty folders... what am I missing here? why is this so incredibly difficult to use?

Try the Downloads folder in your home folder.
