That would be confusing to work with in hypercube form.

Actually, you probably would only have 16 workspaces with that setup.

With the normal cube, you only have 4, workspaces because its technically a rectangular prism with dimensions WxWxH and has 2 WxW face used by cube caps. The hypercube could at best be WxWxHxH, leaving you with 4 HxH and 4 WxW faces which have to be used by cube caps.

I count 16 if the middle one is empty, if there would be faces inbetween the vertexes I would count 22 when it's in cube form.

when it's inbetween cubes forms, 16 faces, 19 if they're all full.

That's if we can use the cube caps.

I guess we'd lose some workspaces in the transition of cubes.
