View Full Version : Why is MAME so biased towards netplay?

Maybe this should rather go on the MAME forums but they don't seem the friendliest in the world and they've told NOT to ever ask about netplay so I'll just post it here...

So am I the only one who would really like to play MAME games on the net? It would be so awesome to be able to play Metal Slugs online with a friend :D

But MAME developers have a... not so positive attitude towards netplay.
Here's a quote from MAME's FAQ:H09. Can I play two-player games over the Internet?

Officially, no. Empirical evidence shows that netplay tends to attract the wrong kind of people. Netplay is also seen as a novelty feature with no development value, so the main developers are not interested in implementing it.

A project called MAMEnet was underway to make it possible to play over the Net, but it hasn't seen any progress since 1999. There was also an unofficial hacked up version of MAME called MAME32k that supported Internet play with the Kaillera program, but apparently that one has died out as well.

Do not ask for such a feature to be implemented, and do not ask us for any support using 3rd party programs.

I'd really like to see this empirical evidence and learn who these wrong kind of people are...:???:
People with friends?

So it's pretty obvious that they're not interested in adding netplay to MAME.
Are there any 3rd party programs that would allow this?

Since they havent done much of anything since 1999 chances are you are out of luck unless you and your friends pursue this on your own and then share your results with others :D

Burn and I were discussing Mame netplay once before, but it's also a good possibility that FAQ is just out of date. I know Xmame does have code in it for network play, it's just not compiled in by default 'cause it's still buggy. At least that's what the Xmame docs say. Then again, they haven't been updated for a very long time. I know GXmame has the option in it, but it's greyed out unless Xmame is compiled with it.

The thing is that MAME is a legal grayzone, you are most possibly breaking the law when you installed those mame roms because i bet you dont have a license to use those roms. Mame can be distributed but when you look at the mame licence it shows clearly that its the users responibility to obtain liceneses for each rom used.

Hench the whole MAME world is very much "don't ask don't tell" because they are all risking legal persuit. MAMENet is even more illegal, and thats why your on your own

Kaillera is alive and well. Their page at www.kaillera.com has download info and server listings. Even download the linux server and run your own. Quite simple. Just this morning I pwned someone in Street Fighter Alpha 3. :)

Sorry to revive an old thread, but:

If you are interested in netplay with MAME, I created a network-enabled fork of MAME. You can read about it and grab the source & binaries here:
