HI, I've recently installed ubuntu (Few weeks ago but I wasn't using it), and now I'm on it alot.
I've been told that Ubuntu is fairly safe out of the box, and if you keep updating it you should be fine, but I just don't think that could be all that needs to be done. So what do you suggest?

To answer this, it does seem wierd coming from a windows environment to not feel safe with a default install. The fact that virii are still out there, even for linux can be scary, but rest assure that the default install of Ubuntu pretty much takes care of 90% of the threats you get from windows. If you are looking at antivirus software, you can add an extra feeling of security by installing ClamAV, and a firewall. There are also several other vendors that provide linux support as well. I currently run Dapper Drake w/o any antivirus or software firewall and have yet have had a problem. Now on the other hand, windows....i won't use windows without an antivirus, firewall, spyware remover, rootkit remover/detector, and anti-hijack software. But congratulations on trying out linux, and i hope you have a good experience.

Yeah, it does feel weird to not have to change everything around, turn off things (like printer sharing, and stuff like that) like you do in windows. Ahh well.

It's not so much Virii that I'm worried about, it's more hackers. I go on a few boards, and interact with some hackers. Most of them are great and have shown me how easy it is to hack into a poorly defended system, hence my questions about tightening security and such.

Could you suggest a firewall that is easy to use (I hear using IP tables can be a bit tricky), and possibly one that is in the Synaptic thingy..(Repitoir, i think).
