Hi, I am trying to connect to the internet with dial up, just for the lulz. It's trying to connect to /dev/modem, which doesn't exist, my modem is plugged into my ethernet port, and the modem is plugged into the wall. I have the username, password, and number, it's just not working for some reason. I'm using debian testing if that helps.

my modem is plugged into my ethernet port, and the modem is plugged into the wall.
How is that even possible? I've heard of PPPOE, but dial-up over ethernet (DUOE?)? ;)
A typical external modem plugs into the machine via a serial port, which a modern computer may not even have any more.

I thought PPPOE was DUOE.

PPPOE is used on ADSL. DUOE is something I just made up.
