View Full Version : Dapper Final Release

I have gone to the logs of the TB meeting today, and it looks like Dapper final release is 1st June, there are to be no more added features apart from (possibly) WPA support, and it will be all bug-fixing from now on, as there is a huge backlog of bugs to fix and they want to see how many of them they can iron out, and they have to fit in debconf in May on top of this. Debconf is a debian developers conference, and quite a few of the Ubuntu developers are also Debian Developers.

I was kind of expecting this since the delay has popular support.

rock on dapper, this is great news for everyone.

if people want "teh bleeding edge" upgrade now, i have it dual booted at home and it already shines! however, this release should be super-stable, and it looks like it will be.

2.5 months of bug fixing eh? The devs are going to be crawling up the wall at the end of that. Good for us endusers though. I have dapper installed and it is fairly stable now. The xgl stuff is a real crowd puller and takes all of two minutes to install

:o Will Dapper be available from the www.shipit.ubuntu.com site as a live/install cd set like breezy was?:) ;)

i think this was a good thing for them to do.
Dapper is being looked at as "The Prime Time" release.
I just hope, for my sanity, that they do add out of the
box WPA/WPA2 support with a with a GUI in both Ubuntu and Kubuntu.
I am still pulling my hair out trying to configure wpa in kubuntu.

and it looks like Dapper final release is 1st June

That's my birthday!

I quite like the idea of getting "the Godiva of Linux" for my birthday. :)

I missed out on all this.
Will later releases be delayed because of this?

The real kicker is Dapper+1 if they indeed push it out as 6.10 :p

All right! It looks like it'll be well-used time. I'm also appreciative for the time- right now, I'm maintaining a Dapper-only project, and this extension should actually give me the ability to polish up the software even more before the official release of Dapper.

So we'll be expecting a Flight-6 by mid-April? (If that's what the "beta release" means)

Quick question: what is dapper+1, +2, etc? :D

I wonder if this will push back the next release as well. That was my only concern from the start.

Personaly I think this was bound to happen sooner or later, working to fixed deadlines before you already start a project is going to end in delays sooner or later and while I like the 6 month cycle I think it should be expanded to 8 or 9 If they are going to get good quality land mark releases out without this happening.

Im all for a delay if it means a better dap but im certain it will have a knock on effect unless you expect them to make the whole of +1 in 3 and a half months.

yes, though it was also proposed to change it to 6-06 so people dont get confused and think its a decimal place.

dapper will be a very good release.

We should name it something like J6 and dapper+1 should be called D6 if it gets pushed back as well to Dec.
J6 and D6 sound kewl like were part of a secret british agency like James Bond..
Now were are my women??

In addendum, they intend to stick to the original release schedule for dapper +1, Oct 06, of which a favourite Code Name at the moment is Edgy Elephant (3 of the CC said they liked it). Dapper +1 therefore is likely to be an 'edgy' release, possibly quite unstable as it will have early almost untested versions of certain bits of software in it, and people will be warned that it will be another 'warty', with things requiring tweaking to get working etc. Dapper +1 will mark the start of a new development cycle, so in reality we are looking at one rock solid release every 2 years.Dapper +4 will be the next major stable release.

LOL.. We could talk them into naming the releases after Bond girls, but I think they are pretty much stuck on the current naiming system :-D
Plus someone might get offended with a release named "Pussygalore." \\:D/
I just hope I can download RC1 before I move and loose my highspeed iNet for a few weeks..

If it has KDE4, AIGLX/XGL + Compiz and so on, I don't care how often it crashes  I'll just use Dapper for anything critical.

Is there any sort of release date for kde 4? It sounds so awesome, but I've heard they haven't even really gotten to work on it yet. Doubt it will be ready for Dapper's successor. Unless that is delayed too.

Here's a rough roadmap (http://plasma.kde.org/cms/1033). There's a lot to do and probably it won't make D++ but one can always hope :p
