View Full Version : Tablet-ready drawing applications in Ubuntu?

Hi all,

I've bought an artist a Genius GPen tablet as a gift, and discovered they just upgraded to Ubuntu (Karmic). I'd like to be able to tell them what Ubuntu graphics software is tablet-ready, can you help?

Any other pointers with getting tablets working in Ubuntu would be welcome too, but mainly I want to be able to tell them what packages they can download and try out.

So far I know:
* They're going to need the Wizardpen drivers https://help.ubuntu.com/community/TabletSetupWizardpen
* That Disney got an old version of Photoshop running under Wine
* That the GIMP is not so easy to use, I'd prefer to hear about other options even if the GIMP does support tablet input

Thanks!

Hi all,

I'm new to Ubuntu and the forums, so I'm not sure what is considered polite when it comes to linking/cross-posting here. I've asked a question about drawing applications that are tablet-ready in the Art & Design forum, and was wondering if any helpful types that hang around here might have answers?

Please reply at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1450048

Thanks!

Gimp and Inkscape are the only ones I've ever used, and both are definitely worth learning.

You might want to check this out too .....

I did some tests a while back now ....

I also used the GPen ... and configured it for use in Karmic ....

The way I did it is described here ........ plus lots of Paint Packages that it works with,

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1322647&page=3

Hope it helps ..... if you have any problems setting it up and need to check out any of
the files you install - to see if they match mine PM me ........ or add the questions here for others to see ,,, your choice ... :)

The GIMP is similar to riding a bike ..... its only difficult when learning it ..... but once mastered is very enjoyable ........
and using the G - Pen ........ works fine in GIMP ......

Hi,
posts in the Art & Design area don't have as many viewers as, say, the absolute beginners forum, so your post might take a day or two to get answered. The quality of the answers is what makes the wait worthwhile.

Anyway, try Gimp, it is a very powerful program once you get into it. Also, there are some nice tools from this package:
http://code.google.com/p/gps-gimp-paint-studio/
they should get you going!

A correction, it's actually an EasyPen i405 not a GPen, but it's still a Genius product so I'm sure it'll be fine. Thanks for all the advice and links, and the thread merge :)

It works in 32 bit not 64 bit. and i had it installed only in 9.10. Zerhache set it up but he is going through some trouble himself. we used the wizardpen package.

Gimp would work, but it could be overwhelming. Try MyPaint.

I'm sorry but in my opinion GIMP is the only 1 you need.

No it is not difficult to use unless you consider yourself with an IQ or below 50.

How difficult is is to select the brush icon and start painting anyway.

MyPaint has some great tools. Give it a whirl.

I am a creative professional and I use Gimp with my Wacom Intuos4 tablet for my work. Gimp has a lot of powerful features and is definitely worth learning. The last version of Photoshop I paid for was Photoshop 7. It works fine under Wine but I find myself using Gimp 95% of the time.

Xara is also great for vector graphics. Inkscape as well.

All with my Wacom tablet - I use GIMP for raster work, Inkscape for vector work and ArtRage 2.5 for fun (runs under WINE really well). http://www.artrage.com/artrage.html

If you haven't tried mypaint I'd definitely recommend it. While no artrage, it's very well designed for fun.
