And then later reopened it. I then hit the power button, and here's what happened:
First time: I am greeted by a lock-screen, I select my user name, enter my password, hit enter, and wait. And wait. I finally switch to another tty, find and kill the process "gnome_screensaver", switch back to active x session, and can now continue where I left off.
Second time: I am greeted by a lock-screen, I select my user name, bang out my password, hit enter, and wait. And switch to another tty, kill the screensaver, switch back to active x session, and continue where I left off.
Third time: I am greeted by a lock-screen, I select my user name, bang out my password, and seconds later I am continuing where I left off. (haha! success!!!)
Fourth time: I am greeted by a lock-screen, I select my user name, bang out my password, hit enter, and...... switch to another tty (y me?), find and kill....
Fifth time: It boots with no lock screen in a matter of seconds and all is well!.... Until I notice that my processor temp is ~80 Deg C and no coaxing will turn the fan on /reboot.
Sixth time: I am greeted by a lock-screen... I hold my tongue out and slightly too the left, hop on one foot, pat my head with my right hand, rub my stomach with my left hand, bang out my password with my nose... and hit enter.... and switch to another tty and type "man MAGIC"
-----
Conclusion: If it is monday and my dresser clock is two minutes fast, and the time showing is an even number in binary, and it is slightly cloudy outside (but sunny in Madrid) AND I am drinking a cold cup of coffee... my computer will correctly return from a suspended state.
