View Full Version : System Administration does not work

I have a clean new install of Lucid in wubi under XP.

At first I thought everything was swell, but much of System/Administration seems dead. Most application programs seem to run properly, but when I click in System/Administration I get the little daisy wheel spinning for 10-20 seconds and the box says "Loading" but then it just blinks out, blank, and nothing happens. I have been through this process several times.

Update Manager seems to work and tells me that my system is up to date. System Testing has been running for a while and seems stuck, but I will let it go a little longer.

Needless to say, I want to use Software Sources and Synaptic to set up my box, what's the deal?

Does it have to be initialized or something?

thanks in advance, Harry

Forestpiskie -

Thanks for the advice. I suspect that the problem is something very simple, but I "cannot get there" because the tools themselves are crippled.

I left "System Testing" running for an hour and it was still hung, so there has to be something wrong.

Re-install is not something I relish, but using Windows for over a decade has made me used to it. My only fear is that I will re-install the same problem again.

thanks, Harry

not sure whether this is just an issue with wubi tbh - never even seen system testing before :)

Try running something in the terminal and see if there are any issues from there

sudo apt-get update

ps you left just as I saw you in the irc channel - if you've not used irc before - you sometimes have to hang about a bit

it might be worth posting in this thread - http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1439526

Dare I say that I am satisfied?

After a complete un-install and clean-up with every type of Windows utilities, I made a fresh wubi installation of Lucid. That pesky error looking for removable media took clicking "cancel" around 80 times the first instance, then about 5-10 times each on 2 subsequent appearances (the last after the reboot into the final phase of installation!) but now, when I plug in my SD card from my camera - instant photos!

I think I just had a bad installation, maybe a surge corrupted the download or something.

Time to start exploring.

Thanks for the time you wasted along with me.

I look forward to sailing away from Redmond into a brave new land. There are a small handful of programs that it will be excruciating to lose.

Mark this bugger as solved. It is under "thread tools" at the top of the page.
