View Full Version : [ubuntu] Why is installing Brother printers so manual?

I had a DELL all-in-one printer, but that apparently is not supported by Linux so I gave it away and bought a Brother DCP-135C since I'd been told Brother had a great Linux relationship and I could see all the drivers on their site (http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/bsc/public_s/id/linux/en/index.html)

It was relatively easy getting printing working on this Brother, but I still haven't managed to get scanning working.

However, my question is - Can anyone explain to me why we need to go through instructions like the ones referenced below to install it, when with other printers we can simply add them through the 'add printer' administration interface?

Is it simply because Brother hasn't contributed something or packaged them right, or are their printers dodgy?

Printer install

Scanner

I'm just curious.
Thanks.

[update] I should have gone here http://www.openprinting.org/printers and here http://forums.openprinting.org/list.php?24 first to see which printers were properly supported before buying.
