Unable to boot with today's updates

I am no longer able to boot into anything but a console login after today's updates. Even low graphics won't load. I do have the ppa:xorg-edgers/nouveau ppa enabled and noticed some updates there. Anyone else seeing this? Can I do updates and enable wireless from console to try to recover? Any suggestions on how to restore my ubuntu?

Run: nano /var/log/apt/history.log

Scroll to the bottom and you should see all the changes just made by the last update. The version number in parentheses shows the old version first and then the version it was replaced with.

It may be possible to remove the newer packages installed and then re-install the older packages.

What is forcing you to the recovery console? Is the screen garbled before you can even get to the log-in screen? If you can get to the log-in, can you load Failsafe Gnome?

One of the packages I got about two hours after you posted (which doesn't affect me because I have an ATI IGP) is nvidia-common. If your screen is getting garbled when gdm loads, that would be my first suspicion. The other packages that get my attention are the ones relating to plymouth. I haven't tried a re-boot since.

Have you tried looking for this problem on launchpad (https://launchpad.net/ubuntu)? Since you have access to the list of all packages updated last time, it should be fairly straightforward to search on each package to see if anyone else has reported something similar.

I just tried re-booting and the system hung on what is supposed to be the plymouth splash screen. But I've been having problems with that since I started using the fglrx driver. Is that even possible, or just coincidence? I was able to re-boot with the previous kernel, 2.6.32-18, the latest I have being 2.6.32-19, perhaps now borked.

One of the packages that came in the last update is called patch. If it is patching the kernel (I'm assuming that it may be), that could be causing our problem.

I got dropped to a login prompt this morning, all I had to do was to login, then run:


sudo service gdm start

I could then login to my desktop.

I just fixed my Lucid install by removing the fglrx driver. I just now re-booted with the latest kernel (NOT borked) and was able to see the usplash too for the first time in about a week.

The fglrx driver I had been using (apparently 2:8.721-0ubuntu7) was leaving me hung with a garbled screen so I couldn't try to log-in and re-start gdm that time. Had to power off and got back in with the previous kernel, rolled back to the xorg driver (1:6.12.192-2ubuntu2) and I'm okay. My laptop has the Radeon 3100 IGP, AMD 780V north bridge.

Sometimes there's a step back in order to take another couple of steps forward.

Just got Light Themes 0.1.6.3 too.

Looking at the history log, it looks like this might be operator error! I was uninstalling an app and thought it worked, but looking at the log this morning it looks like somehow, in software center, I uninstalled basically my entire system. If I recall I was trying to uninstall a plymouth theme. Any way to recover from here?

Looking at the history log, it looks like this might be operator error! I was uninstalling an app and thought it worked, but looking at the log this morning it looks like somehow, in software center, I uninstalled basically my entire system. If I recall I was trying to uninstall a plymouth theme. Any way to recover from here?

If you have the patience, reinstall everything listed. That's not as hard as it sounds but takes time. Something triggered the removal of the ubuntu desktop or kubuntu desktop. Apparently messing with Plymouth can trigger such a cascade now. It's discussed in this thread (http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=9082096&postcount=604). Run:

apt-get install ubuntu-desktop

Try that from the single user prompt. That's a metapackage that will pull in a bunch of stuff that will get you a gnome desktop so you can install anything that didn't get pulled in later from synaptic.

If you prefer using KDE, then run:

apt-get install kubuntu-desktop

Then run nano, gedit or kate to check /var/log/apt/history.log. Install what is still missing from the GUI. There may not be anything much left to worry about unless it's the proper configuration for the graphics driver.

That is probably what happened then. It would be nice if the Software Center told you that uninstalling plymouth = uninstalling ubuntu. Seems like such an action would take a couple of more steps than just uninstalling any random application.

I am running again. Did a fresh install of Ubuntu. Was able to backup the data I needed to keep using console login and tar. (I know... I shouldn't be using beta software for things that would need to get backed up.)
