I cannot seem to get a CD to play --- well, I get it to "play", but there is no sound. Since I get various other sounds, such as that ethereal music after login, I figure sound must be setup ok. I changed the device in the gnome cd player from whatever it was to /dev/sr0, put in a cd, and the player lists the CD and track title info correctly, but when I press play -- no sound. The elapsed time indicators are moving,, and I'm in the audio group.

My system: mac 7300 with g3 upgrade card; using internal cd drive and external apple speakers.

Any suggestions or pointers?

Thanks,
tony

I have the same problem with my "new world" imac g3. Game sounds are fine. Boot up sounds are fine. CDs play but no sound!

I second the request for suggestions or pointers.

Try using xmms with the cd plugin (I don't remember the exact name). The cd sound problem happens because some Mac models (mainly the iBooks) don't have the cable that usually connects the CD drive and the soundcard.
