But.....and perhaps I'm being picky here, the reference pointed to contains information on actually enabling the root user password. Unless I'm missing something I don't understand, I thought this fell under forum rules:

I see no harm in forwarding them the official Ubuntu wiki documentation.

The forums rules on this issue are misunderstood.

On the forums we have a regular influx of new users. These people often do not understand the basics of linux, ie permissions, groups, bash, etc.

The intent of the rules on the forums is to educate these new users.

We do not object to knowledge or even setting a root password. Staff most often objects to one of only a handful of issues:

1. Enabling the root account, and then logging in to X (gnome/KDE, etc) as root.

2. Enabling the root account without explaining how to lock it again or the security risks.

3. Instructing new users to use the root account or gksu natuilus (or similar) as a short cut, without at least referencing additional information on permissions, etc.

Now if a user reads the rootsudo page I gave, they will learn what they need to know to make a decision for themselves.

I hope you can understand the difference between these.
