Simmtronics, IBM and Canonical Bring $190 Netbook to Emerging Markets

Simmbook netbook has been floating around for a few months now, but it's just gotten a considerable boost thanks to a partnership with IBM and Canonical, who have teamed up with the company in an effort to bring the netbook to emerging markets.

That confluence of companies means the netbook will run on Ubuntu Netbook Remix and come pre-loaded with IBM's Client for Smart Work, which includes Lotus Symphony and access to various cloud-based services. As for the netbook itself, it's about as basic as you might expect, including the usual 10-inch display, Atom N270 processor, 1GB of RAM, three-cell battery, and a 160GB hard drive.

Then again, it is available off-the-shelf for just $190 right now, and IBM and Simmtronics are apparently working with various clients to offer the netbook at "a competitive price" to other countries around the world.

Could we have one thread without somebody mentioning MS, especially since there is no mention of it in the article?

I don't really need a Netbook, I'm actually looking at going the other way; larger screen/laptop size. I have a 12" right now and the small screen size is starting to get to me especially after I did a little work on my work's 15" widescreened Thinkpad (T61) outside of the docking station.

I would love to take the machine and put Ubuntu on it instead. Oh well, maybe they'll raffle it off after they upgrade me with a new machine.

Yeah, I would run out and buy a couple if it were ARM.
That 3 cell battery would go a lot further, and they could sell it even cheaper, or pocket more profit.

Going with x86 is crazy!

I thought 3-cells were common with Atom-chipped Netbooks (even though 6-cell are preferred)?

It looks pretty good, and for sub $200 it's pretty tempting. I wonder if there is a 6-cell option to go along with it.
