If you are doing a list I suggest you keep commercial and freeware apart.
But there is a lot of great games available; World of Goo, Quake-/Doom-series, Enemy Territory: Quake Wars, Serious Sam, in addition to games such as OpenTTD, Warzone 2100, Hedgewars, and many many more.

Just finished the demo for penumbra and im quite impressed. Ill definitely buy the full version on payday. I think it would be a good idea for ubuntu to add games like these to the software store, with the ability yo install the demo or pay for the full version.

And let's not forget Neverwinter Nights Diamond, which has a Linux client...
:guitar:
Yeah, it's commercial, but it's cheap and it is definitely the most game you can buy in a box.

If you are looking for some space simulation Vega Strike is pretty neat.

Looks interesting, but the question is, will it ever be released under Linux?
EDIT: To the OP: Could you please confirm that this game is available for Linux, or remove it from the list? The title is a little misleading then.

One big mistake on the list: you missed out Alien Arena. It's gameplay and graphics are WAY better than Quake's.

Does it run easily and well on Ubuntu ?
Don't worry, can not buy it any more.

LiquidWar gets my attention occasionally, but it's pretty simple when you catch onto the pattern. You'll really want to get some human players once you figure out the controls and get bored with the AI.
I also enjoyed Terminus, up to a point. I played through the Mars side but never went back after that...eventually I sold it off. I have WAY too high a stack of games and I'll only wind up replaying very few of them.
