Lightening images (batch process)

My dad is in need of an application that can lighten many images without having to load each one individually. Does anyone know of software that can do this?

If you're looking for something with a GUI, phatch can be used to adjust brightness:

The best commmand line tools are the convert utility from the imagemgick and graphicsmagick packages. These can be used to adjust brightness-contrast and gamma.

I agree Imagemagick is probably the best tool for the job. I would use the modulate tool.
