Hi I use Firefox which is great but it is an ancient version: 3.0.18 which is like 2 years old.

Is there a simple command I can execute to get the latest version?

sudo update firefox ?

Thanks!

Go to Ubuntuzilla on the web.

That is what I do and have the most up to date version on all boxes, regardless of the platform.

For something as important as a browser, you should use your package manager to get updates. If you use a manually installed version as suggested, you will have to keep updating it manually to stay safe.

I think I did that since I added code to the repository - via synaptic? Think that makes sense!

newest version of Ubutnuzilla updates via notification automatically. No more python script and no more having to gksudo to launch and check for updates. There is a "check for updates" in the help menu that works now.

Alternatively, you could use this PPA (https://launchpad.net/~mozillateam/+archive/firefox-stable).

Well at least for Hardy 8.04, Firefox 3.6 is in the repos. I was pleasantly surprised by that about a month or so ago. It just showed up one day. But then I use Synaptic for most all of my updates.

See the Installing Other Versions section of Firefox optimization and troubleshooting thread (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1193567).
