I tried KDE but decided I liked Gnome more so I removed it using instructions to eliminate all packages. When I came back up Skype & Virtualbox were gone. I installed Skype but I'm afraid to reinstall VB & no longer have my XP, or maybe VB is still there & just missing from the menu? (not sure where to find it)

I took a chance & reinstalled. I had to go into edit>menu, turn off VB, then back on (so it may have been there all along) for it to show up, but it seems to be working well.

The XP is still there. Uninstalling software NEVER removes stuff in your home directory.

Go ahead and reinstall VB. It's a Qt app, just like Skype and all of KDE. Probably you removed Qt when uninstalling all the KDE stuff.
