If Infinity Universe (http://www.infinity-universe.com/Infinity/index.php) is ever released it may become one of the biggest space MMORPG's of all time. I don't know when the developers expect it to be completed but the videos look amazing.

Some of the great features of the game are

the ability to enter a planet's atmosphere and land on planets.
It uses procedural programming to generate objects on the fly, promising a universe with millions of star systems and billions of planets.
Twitch-based combat, so the outcome of a battle depends on your skill and reflexes.
There will be cities on each planet you can interact and trade with and even found your own city.

I tried out the installer for the Combat Prototype in Wine not expecting much but.... yes! That's a bingo! The game loads up. However, the fps was unplayably slow and there was no sound. I'm sure these things can be tweaked, the important thing is that it's not Linux hostile.

You can download the combat prototype .exe from here (http://www.infinity-universe.com/Infinity/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=88&Itemid=54).

When you start up the game you will need to check which server is active, you can do this here:

EDIT: From the developer FAQ (http://www.infinity-universe.com/Infinity/index.php?option=com_easyfaq&task=cat&catid=16&Itemid=28#faq30):

Will there be a Linux port ? A Macintosh port ?

A Linux port might come later after release, if there are enough requests. A Macintosh port is unlikely. It might be possible to run the game at decreased performance through virtual machines / emulators.

Just watched the Prototype trailer, and oh my it is stunningly beautiful. There aren't that many space-based MMORPGs out there, so I can only hope this project gets completed.

Wow. That looks promising. Im also looking forward to Jumpgate Evolution, but sadly I'll need Windows to play that.

If these games ever drop, I'll finally have to hang up my Vendetta Online hat.

They've just released a new video of what the game will look like, if it's going to be anything like this video it's going to be just incredible - if it ever gets released....

I put it here because they stated on their website that they are considering a Linux client.

There is none, it is at the moment Windows only, so common sense would tell you where to post it. Don't mean to sound rude but that is a matter of fact :)

It's not even released, even for Windows. I posted here so other people interested in space MMO's could look out for the possibility of a native Linux client, as suggested on their website.

Not that it needed to be carried on by you any further but your post said it all.

I know it isn't released yet a quick look at their website will tell you that.

Look at the title " Infinity Universe space MMORPG prototype works in Wine", it will be Windows only when released (you even copy/pasted the part of the FAQ stating it) and there may/may not be a Linux client. Therefore it is a WINE ran program, the post has been moved as i asked so just drop the issue now.

I had considered all that in choosing which forum to make my post. In the end, the fact that they're very likely to port the game to Linux in the future, tipped the balance in favour of the Gaming and Leisure forum.

I've often seen similar posts in the Gaming and Leisure forum about possible future native Linux games.

Especially with a game of this quality, that looks really awesome, it's important the Linux user community keep an eye on what they're doing, and possibly help them in their decision to support Linux through email campaigns, volunteering to develop the client, all that kind of thing.

I don't think you thought things through.... like I did.

Here we go again, why do you insist on carrying on such a stupid argument, like i said the moderators agreed with me and moved the post, it needs nor wants any more discussion on the topic. The point is the current plan for the game is Windows only, Mac unlikely and Linux possibly, so it WOULD be a WINE app anyway until anyone Confirms a Linux version which no one has, you know it as you posted it yourself stop making mindless arguments.

Anyway...I checked out their latest tech demo video, it shows a lot of promise obviously i can already see a lot to be improved but then it is a tech demo. I like the fact that you can seamlessly go from space to a planets surface.

There is a poll section in the forums, and the number of Linux users seem to be around 7%. A similar number of Mac users. So 13-14% of people who need the OpenGL version. But it's possible those polls aren't up to date.

Also, you have to be logged in to view the polls.

Hey guys, sorry if this is a bit of a necro, but I wanted to comment on the discussion. I'm an avid member of the Infinity forums and a (slowly progressing) Linux user. I've lurked on these forums for a while getting answers to issues that I've had in getting Ubuntu to run.

@Afoot: The only version that is currently being developed is OpenGL. The one guy writing the code (Flavien Brebion) wrote in his dev journal in about 2006 that he was switching to DirectX because OpenGL was too painful, but he hasn't actually made the switch yet. The prototype and the in-engine model viewer (a dev tool for community contributors) are written exclusively for OpenGL and as far as I know he has plans to port it to DirectX, but he's still writing in OpenGL right now (here's a quote to back it up: http://www.infinity-universe.com/Infinity/index.php?option=com_smf&Itemid=75&topic=11440.msg249818#msg249818).

He's one man writing the whole thing, because he wants to maintain control of the IP, both for the game itself and the engine, which he hopes to sell to other game development houses. He basically has two full-time jobs, one writing the engine, and another working for a VR company somewhere in Belgium, so his dev time is limited.

He's not planning to officially support Linux at launch, but that doesn't mean it won't run in Linux. Writing for Windows means a larger market, and while you can trust Linux users to go through the fiddling required to get it running on their platform, the same can't be said for most Windows users. :/ Anyway, the fact that it's being made in OpenGL means that it shouldn't be too hard to get running in Linux, as has already been mentioned.

I just wondered around, and stumbled on this post. (yes I even registered to this board haha).
So Hi board!

Anyway on-topic, I noticed this is the wine category about the infinity-universe topic.

I actually tried building a wine app from the ICP (Infinity Combat Prototype) but failed miserably on it.

Running OSX 10.5 (iMac 24" 2007)

if it's not way to much effort... Could any of you guys find out if it's possible to run the ICP with Wine?

Btw ICP is free, and is part of the combat system of the actual Infinity Universe game :)
It can be downloaded from infinity-universe.com

You guys would be awesome as it is impossible for us Mac users to play it in any way
( bootcamp gives a lot of issues too)

Thane already for reading this
