View Full Version : Linux is taking over my life

You see, I never considered myself a computer geek/fanatic/(insert appropriate word here). I used to be quite happy pottering along in Windows, playing minesweeper, drooling over the various winamp skins, the sheer novelty of StyleXP (novelty for windows anyway). It was straight forward and i was content.
Then one of my friends showed me Linux, and its been a slippery slope ever since. After various distros and a steep learning curve i settled on Ubuntu (which rocks!!!).
Trouble is, I cant stop "playing" with it. I always have to be changing eye-candy, installing software i dont need/know-how-to-use/know-what-it-does and following the endless how-tos in the forums. When trying to compile from source, and an error comes up, i get a rather distinct feeling of glee thinking, "Great, something to research and solve." And the delight at actually fixing or solving it isn't totally unpleasant either.
Why can't i stop fiddling???? I swear i had a dream about linux the other night......wtf!!!!! It's not as if i don't have other more important things to do with my time, i play cricket and rugby, always plenty of work to be done......HELP ME!!!
If anyone can show me how to write a script that automatically electrocutes me through the keyboard everytime i start fiddling about with linux i would be forever greatful.

Funny, I recognize this. To be truthful, you are showing signs of addiction.
The problem with linux is that you can always do things you don't need to do. For me it's a priority issue, focus on what you want to do with your live, don't let it get sucked up by linux or whatever computer related thing.
And yeah, that's a serious answer.

The best thing I have found about Ubuntu is, I am not worried about breaking it. I figure I can always find the How to: to fix what I broke. Man, this stuff is fun.

Starting to take over my life lol, i'm a little devistated about the 6 week dapper delay, it's gunna be released right in the middle of my final year exams argh...
linux is an addiction tbh, sometimes you have to learn way too much about it just to do simple things and the inner nerd starts tribal dancing around the fire of addiction and the flame spreads...

The key is to remember that your configuration will never be "perfect." There is always something more to do, something more to compile... especially with the fluid and ever-changing nature of open-source. There will also always be something that you really want to work but is in beta/won't compile on Ubuntu/etc.
Just get your configuration to the point where it has everything that you need simply to USE it, and make that a convenient and aesthetically pleasing experience. That's a more reasonable goal.
(One of the things I like about (K)Ubuntu is that it makes this process easier, since the default settings/programs are exceptionally well-chosen. The only thing that I absolutely could not live with in Kubuntu was the Plastik theme *shudder*.)
You'll enjoy Linux just as much, if not moreso, when you stop tweaking it and get right down to using it.

i think thats the trouble dude, couldn't give a rats *** if i bugger something up cos theres always the terminal.....forget the 'blue' screen of death, linux has the "black screen of 'oh crap i f**ked up and now will enter random sudo commands and see what happens' "
Just get your configuration to the point where it has everything that you need simply to USE it, and make that a convenient and aesthetically pleasing experience. That's a more reasonable goal.
it had everything i "needed" about an hour after installing breezy i.e. bittornado, mplayer, codecs and amarok. and yet now it has so much more, my pc i think now houses the whole of Synaptics contents.......its like that fat guy who got mega fat because he didnt have the gene to tell him he was full and no longer hungry........

I have the same problem. I am addicted to my laptop and a few months ago I even stopped going out with chicks because my ubuntu was not congured enough. However I found a solution. I asked my brother to put new root password as well as put a new user password and I started to use ubuntu not to configure it 24/7. And I started to go out ith chicks again.
But I will be with ubuntu forever- after a long relatioship he saved me from really big depression lol.

This kind of "addiction" is a typical problem of Gentoo users. Another addiction of very grave kind is addiction to forums and chats. A man addicted to forums once had died of starvation because he was so busy posting messages that he couldn't find a break to even eat. Police later found that he was simultaneously tackling about 40 forums and he would not miss a single post on any of these forums.
So be careful. :)

To be honest, I find the same thing a bit. Linux is just plain fun to tinker with and I've learnt more in the last half year or so, about my computer and what I can do, than in the years before (except possibly way back when, with DOS)

I share your addiction in Linux. How do I satisfy it? Well... I simply use it for my everyday tasks and have Linux adapt to my needs as it grows (that's when I learn). Perhaps that will help you get your priorities back into control.

Seeing as how you don't go out much, you have to install these two packages before prooceding to follow the rest of this manual:
sudo apt-get install sunglasses sun_creme
now, do
cd door
now
mount /dev/hand /home/userneme/door/doorknob
mv /dev/hand 3_feet_outwards
cd outside
That should atleast temproralily solve your problem.

a bit off topic: I've heard of a man (a korean I think) who died while playing Diablo 2. After 2-3 (or more) days of non-stop play, his hardcore hero died and he had a heart attack... Thinks that make you go hmmm...

I've been using Linux full-time for about a year and a half now (back when I also lived in Southampton \\:D/ ), and I'm still addicted to fiddling with it - one of the benefits (or maybe drawbacks!) of using an OS which, at every level, is still being frantically worked on and developed and with which the very latest developments are just an apt-get (for Dapper users) or a ./configure; make; checkinstall (for everyone else!) away! :)

Ooh, sounds familiar...I got all giddy happy when I fixed up
a problem with my fstab all by my lonesome, without having to
ask about it on the forums.
My other favourite distro is Mepis and a user over on Mepislovers.com uses the sigline
"Whoops, broke it again..I'm having too much fun with this" or something similar.
If you're learning a new OS and having fun doing it, that
can't be too terribly bad for you.
