Greetings!
I`m quite newbie to Ubuntu and Linux in general so please forgive me if I ask stupid questions.

I have tried for a period Ubuntu 9.04 and it worked quite well, but after I upgraded to 9.10 the sound vanished.

So I switched to Kubuntu 9.10 where the sound works great with ALSA.

My problem would be that I upgraded to KDE 4.4.1 (used the synaptic and updates) and after I restarted the pc I had to panels, the one of the kde 4.3.5 and one for 4.4.1. Does this mean, that I have both now?
The startup time of the KDE also slowed quite noticeably (+6-7 seconds).

Is there any way to make a "cleanup" sometimes to delete/uninstall the components that you need. (package manager...i know, but there are so many numbers, that I can`t figure out what there are exactly).

+1. where could i find any material regarding the folder structure of Linux. ex. what contains the /var folder, /user folder etc.?

Thank you very much for your time and sorry about my english.
Best regards.

i never seen this before, the old equipment should have been cleaned up automatically.

could you tell us how or what guide you used to upgrade kde ?

my signature has a kubuntu guide full of good stuff, maybe that will answer the rest of your questions.

Unfortunately I might not be able to give more details...
I used this (http://news.softpedia.com/news/How-to-Install-KDE-SC-4-4-on-Ubuntu-9-10-134546.shtml) guide until step 2, then used the Update option from the package manager (because Firefox could not do anything with the apt:// command presented in step 2 in that guide) and installed all from there.

After the first restart the Plasma(?) crashed and I had only a black screen. Started package manager with alt+f2 and installed again all the present updates.

Then everything worked but I had two panels on top of each other...The old one (I presume from 4.3.5) and a new one with the new icons.

Thank you for the answer!

Edit: I installed GNOME too, should i uninstall KDE from there and reinstall it? would it help and would I get the 4.3.5 or 4.4.1 version?
