I Just installed Ubuntu 9.10 64bit on my pc. I have a pair of plantronics Audio 655 USB headphones. When i plug them in i get no sound. When i try to turn the sound up i get the sound bar on screen and its flickering and my system becomes semi unresponsive. I have to reboot to gain full control of my beast. I love sound and i love Ubuntu. What can i try???

A few questions
Did you get all the updates after installing?
That is very important.
Did you use the volume control (the little speaker icon in the panel) to select the usb headset and move a playing stream to it?
Where did you try to adjust the volume?

I did install all the updates. I changed all default audio to generic usb audio driver and than clicked test. there was sound. so i thought it would work. i tried playing a song and no sound. i tried turning up the sound which was already at 50% and the audio bar came up on the right side but it was like glitching or some jazz like that. and than my system becomes non responisve. Thanks for your help by the way. 600 cool points.
