CD and DVD drives not recognized in 9.10 (new user)

G'morning.

I am a new user (6mo.) and after successfully setting up a sony laptop and dell desktop with 9.10 and getting things running, was frustrated to find that on both machines the CD and DVD drives (in case of Dell) are not working/not mounted by OS.

What am I missing?

(first installed 8.x last year on another machine and it was smooth sailing, no probs.)

cd/dvd drives are not mounted in ubuntu 9.10
it is not a problem........
try inserting a cd or dvd...
an icon will appear on the desktop having the cd/dvd name.

if the above solution is not working you have problem in the cd/dvd drive [hardware] it self.....
