This is really annoying, but my system freezes when playing games! I tried gmod and it froze after 30 seconds, then I tried counter strike source, and that froze after like 2-3 mins! How do I fix this?

Edit: forgot to mention that I have the ATI/AMD proprietary FGLRX graphics driver installed and enabled. Is this enough?

you didnt' give any informaiton about your system. Basically what i see here is:
"Gamez not workie!!!! keep freezing. Hlp plz!!!"

You also didn't say if there were any error messages and how much it freezes. does it need a hrd reboot or what?

computer can be freezing for a number of reasons.

- If everything works fine and if it only freezes in more demanding games then it could be that it is overheating. this can be checked and verified by various programmes. you need to consult your motherboard and processor manual on optimal temperatures.

- another reason could be poor power supply unit. it runs out of power and freezes the game. maybe.

- i don't know how old your system is but it could be that your motherboard or graphics card are in poor condition. they work just not under stress. capacitors may be damaged. the easies to see this is to open the box look for capacitors on mother board and grpahics card and see if they are bloated (they should be sort of flat on top)

I am sure there is more options available here...

OS: Ubuntu and Windows Vista
RAM: 3 GB
Video Card: ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT
Processor: Intel Pentium Dual CPU E2180 @ 2.00GHz (2 CPUs), ~2.0GHz
Wine: latest version

The system is not overheating
There are no errors when it freezes, I have to do a hard reset.

The games freeze and make my whole system unresponsive

And my pc is only 2 years old.

2 years... i had a motherboard ruined in 2 years. the other one (same) works for 4th year now. Open the box and check capacitors on motherboard and graphics card.
if they are ok and this is software error then maybe someone else will give you information on how to create or get the log. Linux usually logs things somewhere. only i don't know how to do it :D. if oyu don't get help on forums you can try IRC channel. sometimes it is faster and easier to get help there.

also i see you have Vista on, if for example your CSsource owrks well in Vista then no need to open the box because it is likely a software error then.

so is vista causing ubuntu to mess up or is it something else?

No, what i am saying if game works well in vista with same settings it is not a hardware problem. Again try opening the box to see if capacitors are damaged.

some pictures of leaking ones here:

bulging capacitors here:

It is quite common and the result is either freeze of ocmputer and in more severe cases it can also restart itself or shutdown.

------------------------------------------------------------

It could also be graphics card driver problem. Someone else will have to hellp you troubleshoot this one as i am new to linux.

The games work 100% in vista. So im pretty sure its a driver problem. Gess ill look for support on the driver problem.

What games in ubuntu cause crashes?

Indeed, the 2 games you mentioned were both wine games. This may be a wine conflict problem and should be posted on the wine thread (http://ubuntuforums.org/forumdisplay.php?f=313). What happens when you try running a similar linux native game like nexuiz or tremulous?
