I have no idea what it is, what it does, or anything. I am pretty sure the answer should be obvious to my but I guess I just missed it.
So, what is the fridge? Why is it there? Who is in control of it?

About says http://http://fridge.ubuntu.com/about
"Conceived at UbuntuDownUnder, The Fridge is an information hub for the Ubuntu community, bringing together news, grassroots marketing, advocacy, team collaboration, and great original content.
Just like the family fridge at home, this is where we - the Ubuntu family - can put our best work on display for everyone to see… along with the requisite jokes, reminders, invitations, news clippings, photos and everything else! We’re starting out small, but have some good plans for filling the shelves. Read on to find out about upcoming features, and where to send your suggestions."
And since its fridge.ubuntu.com I can guess who controls it ...
But you knew that, I don't use it or know

Jeff Waugh runs it.
It is a CMS for the ubuntu community. It is tied into the forums in that the discussion of the individual articles is not done on the fridge but in an ubuntuforums sections dedicated to it.
It runs on Drupal.
A weekly visit to the fridge and to planet.ubuntu.com will keep you relatively up-to-date with the ubuntu ecosystem.
...As well as visiting the forums six or seven times a day....

... I forgot... planet.ubuntu.com is a RSS aggregator for some Ubuntu developers and community people's blogs.
Also, there is an authentification mechanism that is supposed to log people into the forums from the fridge using their launchpad identity. Since I am always logged into the forums, I do not know if it is working. Since I never see anybody from outside of the forums post on the fridge discussions, I guess it is not up and running yet.
Launchpad is a web-based tool for software development. A one-stop-shopping experience for code, people, bugs, translations, interfacing between distros, making money, everything. For example, one of the goals for launchpad is to offer translation services (I think Linspire now use them instead of their own translation team).
Also, Launchpad will try to integrate distributed revision control funtionality which will enable someone to file a bug in ubuntu and the corresponding bug fix will get sent to the version of that software for Red Hat, Slackware, Gentoo, ... Neat, huh?
Canonical want to develop Launchpad so they can use it to make money supporting Ubuntu and other projects. Jeff Waugh (I met him at UBZ) told me that it is already bringing in some money from them...
Edit: Great question!
