Hiyah Ubuntu Tribe-ers.:KSlol

I just wanted to comment on, and share a little of what has been going on "here" (in this little corner of Earth) with people that i know, and people that they know.... lol

I have been aware of Linux for a long time, but never really "had the time" to do the research and learn about it. I also didnt (and still do not) know anyone in my personal , everyday life that uses anything but *COUwindowsGH*, besides the president of our Astro Society, and he uses the real old skool stuff for plotting the heavens.

I learned of Ubuntu a few years back, and not long after learning about it, I decided it was something I wanted to learn and use.
I then ordered a disc from Canonical , and it was Gutsy Gibbon, which I used for a couple weeks maybe, ( on dial up)~[ god that was a pain for a straight up newb]. lol

Shortly after I started to feel a little more comfy with it, something happened to my system , that was beyond my comprehension ... and I could not find a remedy... so.. back to XP i went. :( ( good thing I decided to partition that time and not fully wipe and install!)

Well, a couple years have passed since then, and my fuse with windows was getting shorter and shorter, and I have a better machine now, so I figured I would give Ubuntu another go.... I really wanted to rid of windows forever, ..... but I wasnt sure if I could "hack it"..lol, and thought I would probably have to partition my HD again to keep windows on half of it.

As you know... the Universe is good!~
and within about a week or two of looking/playing around in Karmic, ..
I realized that........ hey... I can do this!!
So I stopped using Ubuntu with Wubi, and completey 'closed' and wiped windows away..... and started to open some doors!!

This machine, you would have sworn (when it was infected with windows) was ready for the trash heap.. No matter what one would do, It would "get better" for a week, then go right back into nothingness.

When I was running Ubuntu with Wubi, the machine was acting 100x better than when I would run windows.. (and it was running on straight RAM!) lol

After I wiped the virus, excuse me.. windows from the system, and started using Ubuntu as the only OS on the machine....

My machine now works better than everyone else I know, with windows, vista, 7, xp, you name it. ANd those computers (most of them) are better than my own.

Onto the topic of the thread.. (sorry) lol...

Once I started showing these people my new system, and they saw how well it works, and that it is actually possible for a "normal person" to operate and enjoy....

These people are coming to me to get windows off of their machines, like it is my job or something.

and the people they know, are now inquiring... and saying things like..
"you mean, we dont have to use windows?"
and
" there are other options? really?"
and
"well, if there is another great system out there for free, why do people pay soo much for windows"
and
and..
you get the picture. lol

In the past 2 weeks, I have installed Ubuntu on 4 peoples computers ( only 2 of them guttsy enough to delete windows straight away) but the others will come around I am sure. lol

Every one of them is extremely pleased with Ubuntu . ( 9.10)
and everyday, or every other day, I get someone else asking me to do the same for them or for a friend of theirs.

Are people really this un-aware that they dont need to be slaves to windows?
or has MS just done a really good job at doing what those with the most money (power) do... corrupting people and systems?

I really couldnt believe that some people truly think windows is the only option they have to use their computers!?!?

Anyway........
There are literally more people asking me about, and wanting me to "fix" their computers and add a new OS and/or remove windows from them, than I can handle at the moment. lol

It seems there is a huge majority of people using/"stuck with" windows,
who would really prefer something different, but they are not even aware they have a choice! :o

"absolute power corrupts absolutely".

Thanks everyone here, for all the help you selflessly provide others.
It really does say a whole ton about the OS itself and those behind it.

*deepest bows*

I can believe that people do not know there is a choice other than Microsoft or MAC. Even my Internet Service Provider overlooks the existence of Linux. From one of their email ads:

CA Security Suite*
Stronger Anti-Virus, Firewall, Anti-Spyware, Anti-Spam, Parental Controls, and a new Security Center console.

*Security software is currently not available for Macintosh computers. Internet Security Suite software must be downloaded on Road Runner and registration is required. Terms and conditions of this offer are subject to change at the discretion of Road Runner and/or CA at any time.

I should call them and ask why CA Security Suite will not work on my computer...and no it is not a MAC. :)

rahilm~ thanks m'friend. :o)

nah, neighborhood is pretty lame mostly,
the majority of people in it seem to mostly be about the same....

but more people seem to be 'coming around' than i thought would,
thats good. lol

then....
there are people who have me work on/ fix their windows machines...
who constantly agree with me how messed up windows is,
and how much they are fed up with it....
yet, I show them Ubuntu, they "oohh and ahhh" ;
comment on how nice it seems,
then when I mention to them that they can also use it if they wish
( and that I will also show them how), they almost instantly so "nooo" ...
or "ohhh nahh, not right now" lol
{ then call me 2 days later because windows is giving them some other kind of problem}.

I suppose that is how the Universe keeps balanced, eh? lol

thanks for reading man, <3 rasa

lol Grey Wolf, ~
yeah man, ... hopefully people will w(r)ise up. lol

CA is also what I used when I had windows, for protection.

So glad Im done with that... on mine, anyhow. :/

thanks. <3

I can believe that people do not know there is a choice other than Microsoft or MAC.

in my neighbourhood, (mumbai, india), people do not know there is a choice other than microsoft. Apple is not well-known here. the only apple product people buy is the ipod and that too is now decreasing day-by-day (Thank goodness).

People here do not know what they want. I use odt documents because no one can read them as all of them have microsoft office. Its compulsory. What were we taught in school?? Microsoft word, excel , powerpoint 2003, Coreldraw etc. etc. Dell doesn't provide an ubuntu pre-installed machine. That's why i hate that company so much. (HCL and Compaq provide few models).

With reference to DELL they did sell lappys and netbooks with ubuntu installed and then stopped I think because they were using 9.04 and now an old distro but I have seen some info on them testing 10.04 maybe because its a LTS version.
From what I can make out about Linux being put on PCs is that the companies had a lot of returns and people asking to put windows on.
I use a Dell XPS M1330 running 9.10 and it works very well :P
