Well, maybe not really stupid, when you consider the fact that Linus' name, as he himself admits, is pronounced as Li-nus or Lie-nus (not Li-nis). Maybe some people just presumed since he's the father of Linux and that's how his name is pronounced, then probably that's how Linux is pronounced. :D

I have never been confident about my pronounciation of linux and used to have an embarassing feeling thinking that I might be wrong . Problem solved. :-D

I confess, when I speak swedish its normaly lee-nucks but when I speak english its Lin-ucks all the way :-P
In swedish the logical pronunciation is lee-nucks so that pretty much explains that.

Never been a problem for me. Linus is Finn, I'm a Finn, so I pronounce it like it's finnish. So does Linus, altough I can clearly hear that he speaks much english and actually his pronouncing is somewhere between finnish and english. I'd like to hear him say Linux when he's speakin finnish.
Then again, I have real troubles trying to figure how you would pronounce it. Or how I could write in english how I pronounce Linux.. :-k
edit: Might be something like lenucs, with the weight on the L, not the e. I've heard that finnish is pronounced bit like latin, if that helps anything.. Anyway, the e (i) is short, even bit shorter than in Linus.

In that video it sounds like Linix (like the word linen and unix combined) not Linux (linen and ducks combined)

March 10th, 2006, 07:29 AM
well, it's kinda hard to distinguish between the short "i" and short "u" vowel sounds, especially when saying it fast. But I guess it would be more proper to say "li - nuhx" rather than "li - nix". But I'm not a linguist :D

language, including its pronunciation, is determined by usage. i heard some audio clip in which torvalds introduced himself and then said that linux was pronounced 'LEE-nucks'. now, he's saying it's 'LIN (as in trash bin)-nucks'. obviously, he's caving to the pressure of usage. so, if you have a prefered pronunciation for linux, just keep using it until it is eventually determined to be correct to do so.

It's always been Lin-ucks. Sirin, where did you get this idea that it was any other way? There's an audio file floating around on the internet with Linus introducing himself, and then clarifying that he pronounces it "LEE-nucks". Which may or may not have had something to do with it :).
Anyways, I hear it pronounced in a variety of ways- usually lin-ucks, although I pronounce it according to my whimsy- LEEnucks sometimes, Linucks other times :-D.

Revolution OS is a pretty good documentary, although I find it funny how Torvalds pronounces it like "Lihn-ihx", and then a couple other people in the documentary are more like "Lihn-uhhhhx".:p

Yes, I know. But swedish speaking finns pronounce swedish much like if it was finnish. At least everybody that I know, and people from my fathers side are all swedish speaking..
It's so different that I often have hard time understanding what people speak in Sweden. Even when I have studied it 6 years in school.

back in the early 1990's, i heard about this 20 year old kid who re-wrote the unix kernel. i downloaded it from his site. now on his site he had a link to an english audio file where he introduced himself and pronounced his software as lee-nix.
lol, now after 15 years i have to change?? i'm too old to change.

Getting off-topic, but can't resist the urge to ask...
Does the film Pirates of Silicon Valley portray Bill Gates' character correctly. And no, I'm not talking about M$ bashing :D. Just curious.

It's a movie, I am sure they used a little creative license in creating the charecters.

Getting back on topic: (just a bit, though) :D
Considering that some people only realized now how to pronounce Linux "the Linus way", I wonder how many know how to correctly pronounce Ubuntu.
For example, in one episode of Veronica Mars, if I remember correctly, one of the characters said "uh-buhn-too". (Weee! we make a guest "appearance" in a TV show)

Errr, this is getting a little confusing. In that audio clip it sound more like "Lie-nux" maybe even a little like "Lie-noeks" yet in the OP he pronounces it as "Lin-ux" or "Lin-uhks".
This is just like Mark Shuttleworth pronouncing Ubuntu as "uh-Bun-tu" and Nelson Mandela as "oo-Boon-too" (which is the correct way I believe).
I don't get it.

Yeah you're right. It's his accent in that clip and the fact my headset is of poor quality. It's clearly "lee-nucks".
EDIT: crap, now I think it's "Li-nux" in the google video and "LE-nux" in the audio clip. "Li" ("i" pronounced as "i" in Windows) and Lee ("ee" pronounced as the capital E).

I'll just refer to is as "that operating system with the cute little penguin mascot". I've heard it about ever way imaginable. I think it just depends on where you're from. Is it VI-STAH or VEE-STAH, or is it pronounced OVER PRICED, OVER-RATED JUNK.
I use OO-BUN-TOO, err, wait OO-BOON-TOO, ah what the heck, I use the operating system that uses the cute little penguin.
Phew, I just won't talk any more;)
