View Full Version : I don't get it. Will Ambiance (Dark) or Radiance (Light) be the default?

I hope Ambiance, because it is the best theme I have seen since Shiki-Wine.

Don't like both of them, they are buggy for me. But making ambiance the default one would be very strange decision, dark themes is ugly by definition and only geeks love them.

Bit of a broad generalization there.

Both are great I am happy that we don't argue anymore how bad looking is the default theme in Ubuntu now we argue wich one is more beautiful !!!

I'm going to use human. Both themes are half-finished now and I would imagine they mature but for now are quite uncomfortable (eg. openoffice with Ambiance).
Someone also pointed out that Ambiance with its dark and heavy black bar at the top balances somehow the screen wrongly. I really hope they will make the lighter one (Radiance) default, as this seems at least OK. Still I like the colors of current Human more.

I have to admit I am really liking Radiance, Ambiance is a bit to heavy, e.g. I have a hard time reading text and seeing the bevel around the window decoration buttons.

This is a bit off topic and maybe a bit silly but have the new Light themes already landed in daily lucid builds?

Yes, the Light themes are in the daily builds right now.
I am not a fan of how dark the Ambiance themes is with dark panels, title bars, and menu bars... especially when a window is maximized. I do however love the dark panels, especially with the new single colored icons. So I combined the two!
Attached my little modifications if anyone's interested!

Color palette of new themes is nice, i like Ambiance, but overall look and feel of widgets is bad. They should take Humanity theme and simply change colors and metacity on it. It would be much nicer than current themes...

I can't understand a reason to make "messages indicator" icon single-coloured. It must attract attention if there are new messages, but it doesn't now. BTW, the theme looks half-baked apparently.

Ambiance for me. If only there was a way to get rid of that horrid purple screen in terminal it would be perfect.

For people who don't like new ubuntu themes you will get your ubuntu about one month after final release made by Linux Mint

Terminal=> Change Profile => Default.
You can also still customize your terminal profile under edit => profile preferences.

Change the background color. Solid black for me. Most functional.

Yes, I noticed that they've added another profile to my GNOME-Terminal and I can't delete it. If I'm not allowed to delete the profile, shouldn't it tell me, instead of letting me click the button but performing no action?
Just an observation. It doesn't keep my awake at night:p

Pardon the potential ignorance here but I was just stating to play with the themes. when I opened up the theme selections it was sitting on the choice in the upper left hand side called custom....
After I toggled back and forth between Radiance and Ambiance and back again, the custom selection disappeared. Is this normal?

There is a fix for this in the works. Still purple but more subdued.

From gnome-terminal:
To revert theme of current terminal:
Terminal->Change Profile->Default
To revert theme permanently:
Edit->Profiles... Change "Profile used when launching a new terminal:" to Default.

It's normal. Custom appears once you change your theme, but it only shows the last-used customizations. Once you change themes again, it will disappear. Save your customizations as a theme if you want to keep them.

Ah, so let me see if I am hearing you right. If I save the current Radiance that I am using that will show as Custom on the top, especially if I tweak the original default Radiance, yes?
Also, is the new default left side for max/min buttons and is the mixed up order the default and if not will it be corrected by an update or are we required to go in there and correct it on our own...For now, I am trying to keep a default installation before messing with things. Thanks!
So far, my vote is for Radiance but not 100% sure if I like the light brown on purple background yet. :-)

I have panels at top and bottom of my screen (default position, but the top panel is 48 pixels wide (deep?). This results in a nasty stripe effect. If you increase the panel width (depth) you keep getting these stripes every 25 pixels or so. It would be nice if it just kept the same colour gradient.

Holey crap, i can't believe alot of people like the ambiance Dark theme... i reckon its plain ugly, boring, and unprofessional.... the light radiance theme is ok... a bit better, but still not great.....
in saying this, I do like most of everything else that ubuntu has done with 10.04....

I find myself using Radiance on my desktop since the monitor has light borders and Ambiance on my netbook since that has dark borders. It seems to fit better that way.
I am very happy with it

Aesthetics aside, it seems odd that the new branding is all about "light", when on a fresh installation of Lucid nowadays the default is the dark theme.

I wonder do any of you use ambiance with openoffice? https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/openoffice.org/+bug/554271
This makes me cringe every time, so I have to change themes. But I would think default themes should not behave like that, or do they?

OpenOffice's poor looks and emulated gtk crap is one of the many reasons it needs to just die a quick and painful death.

I have to say that Radiance could use some more polishing. Transparent gray/brownish window borders on a purple background doesn't look too pleasant. :)

I have a problem if either is default.
You see, as long as I have used linux I have had my buttons set up a little differently.
I have the close button on the left and the min/max buttons on the right.
This feels natural to me and I don't intend changing it.
The problem is with either of these themes I am left with messed up buttons, which leaves me with the following options:
1. Change the way I have been using my buttons for several years
This isn't actually an option.
2. Change the default theme after install
I actually like both themes and would want to use them and I have not found another metacity theme that matches in the those themes correctly.
3. Manually image edit the theme so the buttons look right with my setup.
None of those option are ideal and it would be better if the default theme could be used with any button setup.

Tomboy and Abiword, I do miss a good presentation app though but I don't create presentations that often so Google Docs and Evince covers me for viewing them.
Not a complete suite, but it is both faster and prettier than OpenOffice and it fits my work pattern.

My primary application has been openoffice for some time now. I have no special sentimental attachment to it, and actually when something that is able to replace it appears, I will start using it as OOo has its flaws, I agree. But all the previous themes that ubuntu has used and some other themes based on them work this gtk emulation etc around. Not this time though. I understand that this can be considered a statement on ubuntu artwork teams part, but honestly, most of the users don't grasp such intricacies and are left wondering why the new and shiny theme is not behaving correctly.
