As far as I know, those drivers are for x86 only.

Java and linux-ppc dont play well together. Not yet anyways.

The ATI drivers aren't that great. I've heard that they're not a easy to setup as the nVidia ones and they don't perform as well either. If you don't have a brand new Radeon, anything less than a Radeon 9500 will have 3D acceleration with the open sourced driver.

ATI drivers are for your graphics card, and FYI, Java on linux-ppc works fine.
