I am trying to setup a Ubuntu home server so that I can manage multiple systems I have setup. Currently I am hoping to setup a server to 1. host /user directories 2. User management 3. Auto backups 4. All must be cross platform since I am running a couple windows machines, Mac, and of course Ubuntu. My goals are to have one system running Ubuntu for a media server, one Ubuntu desktop system for office use, two vista laptops, one mac book pro and 1 XP desktop. I was thinking about using samba but I am not familer enough with this system to do it alone. I have done my far share of research into this but I'm having trouble getting it setup and polished. The only experience I have only experience with Linux NFS and desktop use. So any help or direction will be helpful.

Thanks for your time

For Mac file serving, you can install netatalk, for example see:
