power management doesn't seem to be working

I used the sticky to install 9.10 64-bit on my 5,2 macbook pro. For the first time I used the machine for an extended period of time while on battery power. just over 3 hours into computing, poof... screen dead. machine shutdown. No sleep, no hibernate, just off.

There was no warning from power management that I had low battery either.

Is anyone else's Power Management working and does anyone have suggestion on how to get mine to do the right thing?
