Actually, I think stands for Disk [C]heck. It probably shouldn't show up every boot.
Also, it will probably become more informative before Lucid gets released.

Ive never seen that either on boot ..the few times Plymouth has worked for me ..or on shutdown.

I saw it after my system borked & I had bad sectors. Couldn't figure out how to manually run fsck so had to boot up the live cd & fix the partition with gparted.

It means you can press "C" to cancel the filesystem check.

(In the new theme, that says "Press C to cancel" I think instead ;p)
