What is the best track layering/music editor for linux you guys have found for someone with mild experience in music editing? I'm just looking for something that can preform simple tasks like "fade in/out, merge layers (multiple song clips as one), cut, paste, ect."

simplst and yet verry usable is Audacity....and its platform-independent

it only lacks in real-time proccessing of effects and some other things.

Audacity is the best for this but you're right the lack of real-time application is not good but there isn't really a good Linux application for that. VST's are a problem unfortunately. However for everything else this is the best and the closest thing to Cubase or Adobe Auditions. IMHO..:)

Simple tasks? Track layering? Qtractor.
Not really an editor though, essentialy it's a multitrack recording app.

Yes, Ardour is the more mature and overall the best, currently, imo.

If you want to try out something lighter and (quite a lot) different, see my signature.
