hp dv4 laptop. sd card reader not working after karmic install

After a fresh install my built in sd card reader is not mounting. i need to format an sd card and cannot do so,is there a fix?

was it working in a previous version? or just windows?

Where else is the SD card used? Can you format it there?

(I have a camcorder, and the manual says, "don't format the SD card in your computer, format it in the camcorder.")

I was going to use it in my girlfriend's phone. it had some corrupt files on it that dmaaged something in my phone so i did not want to risk damaging her phone. it did work in jaunty and intrepid

i believe it's just a generic drive. im not seeing any branding in my specs at all
