As you can see, GNOME is moving closer to unify the look & feel with other desktop such as KDE via Tango icon set. I have asked Jimmac about the future of gnome-icon-theme for GNOME3. He said it will be Tango icon or Tango-ified icon set. I have created a post about Human icon vs Tango icon before and I have seen a quite large of people here does not like Tango icons because of its bright and colorful perspective. Well, Lapo Calamandrei created a sample of Tango-ified new-style Human icons. And I love it so much, yet again, I make another post to collect Ubuntu's users opinions about this trend. Let's seriously vote for the good sake of Ubuntu's users.

Pleasse note: Left handside icon set is new Human icon and right handside set is Tango-ified set.

I like this theme, but the orange folders just aren't right -- they aren't "human" enough. Having them be tan/brown (a human color) will fit in better with the rest of the theme.

I think these are much better than the original "Human" icon theme. This is a good move.

The icon I love the most is the Tango folder one. It's so cute I could kiss it. The default icon folder for human looks like it got mistaken for a mosquito and consequently, got squashed.

For Tango freaks: Ubuntu Tango GDM (http://wombat.nuxified.com/node/151). The blog has some other nice artwork.

Voted Tango, but I think the other trash bins look better... I think its just the darker bottom and I don't know how I feel about the Paper in the Tango one... looks too "dirty"

i like them. it would be great if there were maybe three sets - these, a blue set and one in human colour, so all the people who are clueless with art can download/have a colour they like  just let me know where i can get the blue set :D

It more closely resembles my trash can. :-)

Tango-ified Human for sure. I love the folder, hard drive and keyboard alot better, as bored2k said; not squashed. Although I like the original Human trash can better.

The original Human icons are looking a bit dated and square. They're GOOD. I'd be proud to use them. But Tango-ified Human is a bit sexier and more current. I'm still someting of a noob, so I don't know whether they're SVG or not. Hope so.

from the screenshot I'd say they are not svg because of the much nicer shadows, which I prefer, and also because svg is so slow and such a resource hog....hopefully they won't be svg

I think you need to define the 'original human' theme more clearly. Ie: Is the human theme you're referring to the icons on the left of the icons preview or the human theme in Breezy?
That said, I think that the tango icon theme has nice colors, but I do not like how the folders look. The icons on the left hand side of your picture are sleeker and more professional looking.
There is also something to be said about a theme advertising itself too much, or about branding an OS with a theme. The login screen for example. Who is that much of a fanatic of a theme that they want to see its logos and branding displayed prominently.
I believe that the ubuntu logo should be there (and perhaps 'linux' in small text), not the Tango logo. If you are going to display the tango logo at least make sure that you are not shoving it in our faces. I do not need to be reminded everytime I log on that I am using the Tango theme, nor do I need people asking me 'what is tango?', 'oh its just a theme', 'is that all?'.

Also, the tangofied login screen seems cold and uninviting. If it is meant to look sleek and professional in addition to friendly there are other themes which accomplish the same thing.

The icon placement in Tux C12 Ubuntu (http://www.gnome-look.org/content/preview.php?preview=1&id=32548&file1=32548-1.png&file2=&file3=&name=Tux+C12+Ubuntu) Is particularly nice, and intuitive because the icons are friendly looking in addition to being labelled. Thereby bypassing the problem of 'mystery meat' design.
I also respectfully request that a 'face browser' be added. It will be useful for a machine with multiple users, or people who might otherwise forget their username (is it Dave or dave?)

The login screen is not affiliated with Tango, AFAIK. Just some guy who gave up some of his time to make something for people to enjoy. The actual Tango icon theme only contains one self-reference, and that's the placeholder applications-menu icon.
Also, Tango is more than just a theme. It's an effort to unify graphics in future and present Linux desktops, which means it's perfectly natural for artists (and others!) to get excited about it. Any new influential icon themes that don't comply with the Tango guidelines are (IMHO) interfering with the goal of the Tango Desktop Project. That's why I think that Ubuntu should make Tango icons now that they have the chance, so as to not hamper the progress that's being made in this arena. That, and because the Tangoified icons look so much cooler.
Well, there goes my chances of a warm reception in these forums. :( I should remember next time not to be so uptight and mean. :-#

Please excuse me if my critisicm seemed harsh. It was meant to be constructive. And if I could word it to sound nicer while still being able to express my point clearly, I would.

You have nothing to apologise for. I just disagreed with some of your points is all. :KS
Next time I'll use more of these so people won't get the wrong idea: ;) :D \\:D/ =D>
There, I feel better already.

I like the tangoified ones...that said, I admit to changing my icons and other desktop elements very often so maybe my opinion should not count quite as much.

Thanks for the feedback on that GDM theme guys. I see that there are some mixed feelings about so I'll talk a bit about why I did it what it's for and such.
Right now the Ubuntu art team are concentrating on creating some themed-packages for Ubuntu. We don't actually get much of a say in regards what goes into Dapper mainstream (the CDs essentially). Mark would like use to do some community contributed themed-packages of which the best one might make it as a secondary set of art goodies into Dapper. All of these themed-packages, provided they are fairly complete, consistent and of good quality can essentially go straight into universe. So that Tango GDM mentioned above will be used for this. It will most likely still be altered to make it more consistent with everything else.
We have a wiki page on what has been proposed by various people here (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ArtworkTeam/AdditionalThemes). One of these will be Tango. The package will include the following:
gdm theme
splash
metacity theme
gaim icon set
gaim emotes
wallpaper(s)
firefox theme
thunderbird theme
gtk theme (if one is done for Tango)
gaim main dialogue image/splash
the icon set
app icons
...
This is idealy for each themed-package. So the Tango package which I and some other people namely Andreas Nilsson (who also does some excellent work directly for the Tango Project) will feature all of the above, in a Tango style. A complete Tango package for a complete desktop experience, for Ubuntu users. Once we've completed the GNOME (Ubuntu) package we'll move on and make a KDE (Kubuntu) Tango package as well.
As for the app icons, the term might confuse some. I mean Tango-styled icons for apps. So that the icons of apps fit in with your desktop. Andreas has begun working on some these. You can check them out here (http://ramnet.se/~nisse/blog/?p=22).
Since the package is just compilation of themes and art goodies it should be very easy to just re-package it for other distros and whatnot.
We've set up a wiki page for the Tango themed-package. It lists what has already been done, what we still want to do and some other things. It may be found here here (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ArtworkTeam/OfficialTango).
Hope that clears up one or two things. Thanks for the comments, they're much appreciated. I'll see about falling back on some of them when I touch on the GDM theme again later.
Kind regards,

I also voted for the Tango-ified icons. The Tango team has put much effort into creating nice, beautiful, unified icons, so why not use them.
Branding them with Ubuntu colors is ok for me (although the new dark-orange ubuntulooks theme (as of ubuntulooks-0.9.5 it's brown again unfortunately) fits perfectly with the original blue Tango icons).

I love the Tango icons, but the orange colour just isn't right! We need a dark yellowish-brown colour like: #D9BB7A, or #826748
Also, the default theme should use the ubuntulooks engine but with the Clearlooks-4humans colours.

I also voted Tango-ified and agree on the orange being too loud. I also don't like the monitor very much for "my computer" icon. Make a monitor that looks new and expensive not like an old CRT. ;)

I love this new Human theme. It pretty much fixes everything I didn't like about Tango (mainly, the folder icons), uses the bright new theme and just looks awesome.
