How can I show a battery laptop monitor on the desktop?

On the panel you mean? In the upper right corner of the screen?
If you go to system > preferences > power management > general you can select when the battery icon is on on the upper panel. I believe the default setting is for when it's charging.
Is that what you were asking? I hope so! :D

I need to make this thread a little harder. Is there a package that I could install that would give me a status on my battery, such as, percentage of life left as an icon so when the machine is on battery it will show an icon with the percentage of life left in the battery.
Time would be good, too.
