Well I am going intel because at heart I love intel, and well the amd clock issue i am having now makes me weary of owning another amd(just a personal quirk). anyway the pc will be a gaming machine that is connected via kvm to my ubuntu desktops monitor and keyboard (the extras are to tote portably) what do you guys think of the machine?

The AMD Clocking issue, is kernel related. Maybe by the time Dapper comes about it will be resolved. I had this problem when using Breezy, but now im on Arch and there are no problems. :)

All but the Windows XP SP2 is great, hehe, good luck with your new comp. :)

I have a shuttle case. If you do use a raptor which does run warm. I recomend you get meta scheers and cut the area were the hard drive would mount. Then move your hard drive up higher away from the northbrisdge controler. This will also allow room for a hard drive fan/heatsink unit.
I have a Shuttle XPC SK41G that I did this to.
My system only had one fan for the ICE cooling unit which acted as a case fan and cou fan at the same time. It cut back on the noise but still the CPU I have in the system ran about 130 degree farienhiet with me running a 7200RPM hard drive.
I have tried many ways to cool the system down.
The bottom line is they make some case shells that sell on ebay. They are made by shuttle. But they have huge wire screen vents on the side.
Cheers,
Joey

Another warning about the heat. I have two Shuttles. One has a PIV Prescott. Ugghh. It's temperature fluctuations have the fan changing speed way too much. To play Warcraft I often lift the case off, else I get stuttering.

The other one has an older PIV which actually does okay. So depending on how hot that processor you're buying runs, there may be problems.

I should have read reviews on the Prescott before buying one.

the case looks like a good idea and i may decide to put in an amd 64 processor and then upgrade the ram with the money i save but I dont know, I plan to buy the pc in stages so I am not sure exactly what I will end up buying. But it will be posted :) . as an afterthought what is the recommended way to cool a shuttle besides having the mesh?

Well from experience, you are very limited. The fan mounts inside a aluminum shroud mounted right against the fins of the cooler (ICE unit). Its a standard 80mm fan. It can get loud when the system gets warm, but most of the time it stays fairly silent. I think the newer models are also little more silent then mine. But other then getting a better fan and the mesh cover that is about it. Put those together and thats all you really need.
I myself cut the shrowed on my system and placed a 80mm fan that was much thicker then normall to try to cool it better. Its quieter, but still only lowerd the case temp by 5 degrees. Also this proceedure required me to hot glue the fan into place. If I had it to do over again I would have just got a nice blue LED silent fan from coolermaster and used the mesh cover.
Cheers,
Joey

here is the amd processor i was looking at http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819103539 but i dont like the idea of 64 bit windows because of driver issues. Plus the 64bit processor should be able to run the 32bit os faster in my thinking but idk...

Nice CPU..
I wouldnt run Windows64bit. Stick to 32bit for gamming.
I would run Ubuntu 64bit as the main OS and WinXP just for gaming only.
Ubuntu 64bit is faster then the 32bit. Not a huge amount faster, but still never the less it is faster.

the only thing that is calling me to intel is in my experience they have been more reliable than amd systems and less heat is produced normally. That may no longer be the case but with the shuttle I want it as cool as possible without water cooling or some loud industrial fan. Also I dont really see the point in buying a cpu over 250 bucks because at some point the cpu is no longer the bottleneck and your ram, gpu, and os become the bottlenecks and there is only so much that can be done about those.

Well - I owned a Shuttle (SN85G4), in fact, I still own it, but it's broken. I am quite disappointed by the insufficient heat management and the low quality of some parts.
I had two of my fan connectors dying after a while and I am not the only one with this problem.
Maybe that has changed, still it seems to me that barebones are not ideal gaming machines and generelly suffer some shortages with recent hardware mainly related to the heat problem.
Thus I recommend to get a neat case (e.g. Coolermaster Centurion CAC-05), an AMD CPU and a decent CPU fan (like Artic Cooling Ultra 64 TC) - this will save you from some headaches.

Damn, how you been looking in at my computer.
I got the mATX tower of the Centurion and a Silencer 64 on mine.
Add a couple of Coolermaster Silent 80mm blue LED case fan and thats what I have :)

that is currently a tempting graphics card, does anyone know if it will fit in a shuttle with the amd64 3700+ processor.... i think it should I am not going to add an aditional sound card or anything, also for a hard drive the link below seems to be the best deal on storage/performance/cost...

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822144701

also should I be concerned about the small power supply? its only 350watts on most shuttles I look at... of course all it will have is
mobo
proc
dvd burner
hdd
graphics card
but i still dont know...

AMD Athlon 64 CPU's run quite a bit cooler than the current P4 CPU's from Intel. Now later this year, Intel is dumping the Netburst architechture (P4) and basing all of it's cores on the Pentium M for this very reason. If you are buying in the next few months then go with AMD but if you are willing to wait towards the end of the year then the new Intel cores may be a good choice.

so the amd64 and that graphics card will be able to get enough power from a 350watt psu? it seems a tad on the skimp side to me but I am used to fullsized desktops not the smaller shuttle form factor.

Honestly, The problem will not be the CPU when it comes to a 350 watt PSU. That graphics card will require a 400 watt PSU as it's minimum. A 6600GT requires a minimum of a 350 watt PSU. You should consider a bigger power supply just because todays graphics cards will require them.

You got that right. I was looking at one of those to put in my shuttle system..
ehh.. I am not going to say it will not fit. But if does.. It will be damn close.
You got to take into consideration the card will be setting right next to the aluminum drive mount. Specificly the the one that holds the CD/DVD-ROM.
If I was you. This is my advice. Shuttle XPCs are nice, but they are not made for a hardcore gammer. They are a Mom and Pop PC if you know what I am getting at.
If you want a performance PC, or at least a PC you can upgrade to better perforamce later own. Build a mATX if you still want to have a small PC. It will be cheaper, run cooler, have less headaches upgrading.
Take a look at the photos I took of my system.. My PC is so quite the only thing I can here is the chirping of my Raptor drive.
Cheers,
Joey

BTW.. If you do use a shuttle XPC, and use a 7200RPM drive. You may need a fan cooler for the HDD. Depends on how paranoid you are, Mine ended up running fine without one. But if you do want a fan cooler on your hard drive you will not have room for a 3.5 floppy or zip drive. Just FYI...
