I am new to Linux, open source, and Ubuntu. Presently, I am making the switch to Ubuntu, however I am still in Windows XP (AMD 64). I would like to install a C compiler on my Windows. I have heard about GCC and Build Essentials and MinGW. Can someone tell me what is the best program to use, and secondly, how I can install the program on Windows XP. Thanks Dave

GCC is part of build-essentials. If you're doing any sort of development work in C, you'll want the entire build-essentials package. MinGW is a GCC cross compiler for the Windows API. You probably don't need it.
