Sorry for such a long read, it's a long story ;).
While I was on the computer yesterday, I had downloaded a .exe. I ran it, everything went fine…A few minutes later, I had a lil notification from McAfee saying that I may have gotten a worm. I told it to delete it, it said that I should do a file scan (it always says that after deleting a suspicious file), I clicked no, as always. Another minute went by, another lil notification that said “5 emails have been sent in the last minute. This could be activity of a a worm”. I was like “Oh crap”. I told it to delete it, popup went away. I started to go the the MS site, because near the same time, a lil toolbar icon with a balloon said “Your computer might have spyware. Click here to get help.” I assumed it from MS (I later realized that it was the worm). I clicked it, assuming it would go the MS site. Well, it didn’t. A program poped up “Spyware doctor”, or something similar. I realy started freaking out. I closed the program, and it kept on coming up. By this time, it was starting to get late, and my dad wanted to use the computer. I didn’t want him to know what I had done, so I could do anything drastic (I.E. try to remove the program), or he would get pissed, try to fix it, and fail. Anyways, another lil pop, it said “30 emails have been sent in the last second. This may be…yadayaya” …I clicked delete, still trying to download MS anti spyware (You havta get that damn genuine check). A few more of those came up, and they started to be like “100 emails have been sent in the last second” &c.
I looked at my processes, ended some that I haven’t seen before, hoping that it would fix the problem. I also was still clicking the damn bubble thing that said I had spyware…My processes filled up with 100+ of a .exe all taking up minimal memory. I just shut down to prevent any further damage. Normaly, I would do a system restore via safe mode, but no, my dad had to go on the computer. I took a shower then to not get yelled at :P. I come back in, he’s on the computer, everything looks fine and dandy. He says “You know you gave the computer a Trojan Horse?”. I said “No” (which wasn’t lying, I hadn’t it was a worm ;)). I asked if everything was fine, he said “I hope so”. Well, I was satisfied. I started watching the grammys or whatever with my mom. Durring a commercial break, I hear “Damn”. I look over, see a black screen with some white text in a system font:
“Windows could not find
WINDOWS/CONFIG/
The file may be corrupt or deleted. You can try to fix this problem by using your windows…”
My dad asks me if there is any way to do a system restore outside of the regular windows enviorment. I tell him safe mode, we try it, doesn’t boot, same error.
Mph, my turn to try to fix the problem. I go on there, luckly having a Ubuntu liveCD, boot on that, and go into the partion manager, to try to make a new partion in order to install windows on… Well, after a few trys of shrinking my current partion to as small as possible, and failing, I just made a new one, took out the CD, and put in the MS reinstall one to install XP on the new partion.
I boot up, forget to hit a key (As it says “Hit any key to boot from a CD…”) well….what do you know? XP boots up fine. I went in my mom and dad’s room, telling my dad that I fixed it (as some of you know, he’s an ******* to me), so I got some praise.
Know I realy hope he didn’t go on the coputer again this morning, as if he did, we might be screwed. I’m hoping a system restore in safe mode will fix this problem :).
This was from a thread I posted at another forum, so some stuff, mainly the hardass thing, doesn't apply to you guys.
I'm pretty sure my moving around of data in Ubuntu saved MS, and all of my files :).
