View Full Version : Introductions Board?

Quite often I've found that there are people posting introductions, you know the "I'm new UF hey all" in the Help, Testimonials and Help boards. I know their most appropriate place would be the café but I think that a lot of new members may not have any intention to post in that particular area of the forums, especially considering some of the discussion that goes on in there.

Anyway, do you think that having an Introductions board would be a good idea? Just for new members to post introductions.

I could agree with that, but due to database issues it would be unsuitable to add a board for introductions. I would recommend a sticky thread in the Absolute Beginners board (and maybe one in the Community Cafe as well).

Database Issues? I can't think of many instances where adding a board would cause Database issues. Especially considering it probably won't be particularly as active as the other boards.

The only way there could be a "database issue" is if they have the database locked for editing (in which case the ENTIRE forum is unusable).

However, having designed, implemented and administered several forums in the past for several subjects, I can tell you that whole areas centered around introductions die, and die fast. You get a ton of people introducing themselves, even though they've been around for years, and a couple of new users. Then, typically within 4 months, the area slows to a crawl.

BUT, the "I am new here, and I joined because...." posts don't stop. They just are no longer posted in the correct area - just like now.

JackRock, on one of my forums I have new members forced to post an introduction first (We were getting a lot of spam). Though that's not really applicable to UF due to it being a tech support forum (People wanting to fix stuff, don't want to be posting intros about themselves first).

What about an "Introduction" thread ? Would you like that ?

We used to have one sticky in the Cafe, and it got silent and purged some time ago. I'd favor posting a new one. -1 to a new sub-forum. Our structure is already quite complex and new users sometimes have difficulties to find their way around.

I second bapoumba and invite you to start a new thread in the Cafe for introductions.

Cafe is easy to find and a more appropriate place for introductions.

I looked for one when I first joined.

We had one some time ago. It died at some point. This is a new thread, created during this discussion.
