External DVD Drive & Ubuntu?

hello.

is it possible to boot ubuntu off of an external disc drive? it boots snow leopard fine, but wont boot any other disc (tried windows 7 & arch linux). ive also tried refit to boot the disc and it gives me an error about the firmware not being able to load or something.

any ways to get this working?

if it is firewire, it should work

Agree with previous post, anything but firewire should slow down your system considerably.
