OK this has been driving me nuts and is happening in Ubuntu 8.04 (April 2008) on a Lenovo laptop. My admin password contains characters on the far right of the keyboard. When I turn the laptop on I can log in with my name and password correctly but after logon the keyboard appears to be remapped so that several of the keys on the right side point to other things. Meaning that after I'm logged in I can no longer log in again - no updates, no typing my sudo password, no nothing if it involves anything to the right of J or so.

Any ideas??

The first guess is that your user profile has somehow gotten a foreign keyboard assigned to it. I assume you are using a machine with a qwerty keyboard. The German one, for instance, is qwertz, with the y where the z is on a qwerty.

Relating to your description, right of p is , right of l is , right of m is , . - , and right of 0 (zero) is . Shift and a number is all different too.

Does that ring any bells?
