Are you trying to use your computer as a server for anyone to go on to, or is this just a server for your lan?

You can use one of these ISOs
http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download-server
p.s. make sure you click on the "alternative download options" thingy. a lot of people miss it and when their finished downloading and installing they ask why ubuntu only sees 3.7 GB of RAM...

Youll either need a static IP, or if you have a dynamic IP address, you will have to use a service such as dyndns.org. A tutorial for setting it up (using ddclient, which is pretty easy) can be found here: http://www.dyndns.com/support/kb/using_ddclient_with_dyndns_services.html
You will also have to forward ports through your router to the particular machine's IP address (on the LAN I mean).
p.p.p.s. you might also want to look into your ISPs TOS to see if they hate people who host servers on their connection.... Mine didnt like it for sure..... and I ended up upgrading to a business plan....
