I like music that sounds "new". I like new sounds and I especially like music with electronic influences.

I definitely like metal but I rpefer it with a symphonic influence with at least one keyboard.

For now I'm listening to:
-Children of Bodom
-Switchblade symphony
-Sisters of Mercy
-Funkervogt
-marumari
-Bauhaus
-the occasional otomo yoshihide experimental music song sent to me by my friend lol
-the minibosses (I like them because of my nintendo nostalgia)
-and much more

by the way I discovered "lil pocket knife" lately and hahahaha it is so funny. Try to listen to their song "A.D.D." . Priceless. (you can listen to them o www.pandora.com it's a free radio on the net"

I listen to anything that engages the listener (me), my preferences are pretty broad.. I don't like playing favorites and waving flags, but for the hell of it, some of my favs:

Metallica, Pantera (particularily Dime and Vinnie), Megadeth, Slayer, The Band, Jethro Tull, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Rolling Stones, Johnny Cash, Bone Thugs 'n' Harmony, many many more fav's

Basically impress me with a new idea/style, 'engage' my attention, and I'll dig you. A lot of new music does neither, so I lurk in the past somewhat. Also I don't like if you threaten to sue me for backing up my album's, but Ill forgive you if they're good enough - especially since you can't actually sue me where I live yet..

everything except death metal(this is noise, not music), country(bland and boring beyond belief), and mind numbing techno crap.

i mostly like a lot of indie, jazz, and blues.

good artists mentioned so far include:
pink floyd, hendrix, led zepellin, joe satriani, godspeed you black emperor!.
why has nobody mentioned the these:
velvet underground, joy division, gemma hayes, carina round, slowdive, kathleen edwards, delgados, regina spektor, terami hirsch, nick drake, emm gryner, mazzy star, and hope sandoval.

And this is a good place to post my rant I guess lol

Normally, the general public thinks electronic music = techo or trance or whatever. While these are sub categories of electronic music, they are not all electronic music styles.

I'm not implying that ComplexNumber didn't know that, but the timing was just too good for me :P

Oh... and I hate hip hop and getto influenced music.

Lots of stuff, too much to list, but I'll list a couple of my favorites.

Do As Infinity - Asian band that I fell in love with a few years ago, and has become my favorite band. Too bad they just split up. :(

David Nevue - He's a pianist, very good and relaxing music. http://www.davidnevue.com/ He has free samples of a bunch of his music on his site if you wanna give him a listen.

Don't really feel like listing everything I listen to right now, but those are two of my current favorites. I usually stay away from popular music that plays on mtv and all that, as they generally sound like trash, but there are exceptions. (No rap or anything, ugh.)

If you haven't heard Tristania, I'd recommend giving them a listen... sounds like you might like them. I wouldn't bother with their newest album, though (Ashes)... I would start with the one before that (World of Glass) and work your way back... or just stick with World of Glass.

death metal(this is noise, not music),
There is 'death metal' that is just noise, but there are a lot of artists in the 'death metal' scene that are very musically impressive. Just because it's heavy and loud, doesn't mean its not musical. Some metal bands can blend rhythm and harmony like no others, while kicking your ***. You shouldn't take the phrase too seriously, its just a word. Maybe you just don't like getting your *** kicked by your music.. I really do

country(bland and boring beyond belief),
Maybe on country music stations, but the same is with all radio, no potency. You should look into old time country --> johnny cash, merle haggard, george jones
far from boring, in my opinion, but maybe just not your thing

far from boring, in my opinion, but maybe just not your thing hehe they're typical of the the ones who i'm referring to. the only country that i can tolerate is alt country (ie watered down country). part of the reasons why is the instruments that they use, the way that they use them, and the whole structure of country.

i forgot to add. i hate hip hop lyrics, but love the groove.

Do you mind naming some Death Metal bands you used to like?

There certainly are some bands that are more noise than anything else, though most Death Metal bands I can think of certainly have enough melody to not be considered anything similar to just "noise". Take Nocturnus, Bloodbath or Death as examples. Death have huge amounts of melody and are possibly one of the most renowned bands in the sub-genre.

Of course, if you're thinking of the more Gore/Brutal Death Metal bands, I could somewhat agree. Most of them do take it too far and seem to lack much melody and rythm.

Ride the lightning was ok... I really didnt like Kill Em All. I havnt heard and justice for all but I plan to sometime.

Probably the reason why I didnt like ride the lightning was because I have it in crappy 128Kbps quality :K

Ahahahahaha. Thanks, you've just made my day.

I'll give you Hell Bastard, just because their earlier material was Grindcore (which is actually just an extreme version of old-school Hardcore Punk), but both Metallica and Megadeth's earlier material was Thrash Metal. I've even heard their demo's, so they're not hiding any Death Metal music away from me anywhere. Plus, the first Death Metal album (arguably Possessed's Seven Churches) only came out a year before Metallica's third album.

No offense, but the only reason I can see mixing up Thrash and Death Metal would be because of the earlier Death Metal bands, which evolved from Thrash Metal. Though, they're more likely to have been influenced by the heavier Thrash Metal bands like Dark Angel than Metallica or Megadeth.

Give Nightwish or Within Tempation a try sounds like what your listening to, both are currently on my playlist.

Alright, time to stop behaving like my little brother. But, fact is, I can't stand that band. I love Within Temptation, I adore gothic music and darkwave, I love opera and classical music (most of it, anyway), I like jazz - but if there's something I can't stand, then that's the sound Nightwish has become so famous for. Nah, give me a good old Bauhaus or Sisters record, or perhaps something HIM, Black Tape for a Blue Girl or Rancid and I'm happy.

1967 (Velvet underground released "the Velvet Underground & Nico") it should have been released a year or 2 before that (because thats when it was completed), but was delayed and wasn't released officially until 67 due to legal reasons. some cash strapped drug taking guy(someone with the surname of emerson) who was part of the factory decided to try and sue because he claimed that his photo had been used on the cover without permission. so it was delayed while his photo had to be airbrushed out.

For anyone who cares, I mainly listen to a lot of "melodic hardcore" (I hate genre names)

Basically, the best band in the world imho is Leatherface (http://www.leatherface.uk.com/), and there are a fair few relatively underground bands out there that do (or have done) similar stuff.

The Newest Industry (http://www.thenewestindustry.com/), Crackle! (http://www.crackle.freeuk.com/), Bombed Out (http://bombedout.com/) and Boss Tuneage (http://www.bosstuneage.com/) among others keep me sane.

Hi - interesting thread - I've just realised that I sit here, hour after hour and hardly ever listen to music at all.

I think I 'got lost' some time in the 80s and have never found a way back - so I guess it can't be all that important to me!

I have got a pile of vinyl and some cds, not to mention a good old-fashioned steam radio and the missus has an mp3 player with Beatles, Beach Boys and stuff like that, which probably 'dates' us pretty well :( !

Regards, rock-hopper.
