After much searching I can't find an answer to my question and request your help. Maybe I am searching using the wrong terms, but anyway, here is my question.

I am looking to reinstall Ubuntu but with just the minimal install disk (or file if you prefer).

I want to better tweak my gnome apps/configurations and so on. If I install gnome from the gnome website as opposed to the Ubuntu-tweaked-version-of-gnome, would I have better success at removing apps I don't want?

Right now I can easily remove, Transmission and Gnome-Games and so on, but as I look to trim a little more (and no I don't want to do a complete build up such as an Arch - which I have on my other HD) would it be easier with plain gnome?

Thanks,
Randy

Probably not. What exactly do you want to remove?

Extra apps/help tools that have been added. I am not on my Ubuntu machine here at work, but of the top of my head, I am thinking something like evince or something like that. When I do go to remove these type of apps, I get the warning that it is required by ubuntu-desktop or another essential file.

I am not 100% certain on this, but it's my understanding that "ubuntu-desktop" is just a metapackage that can be safely removed. It doesn't actually have any programs but has dependencies so that if you were to install it, it would pull in all the default software like evince, evolution and so on.

I believe that you should be able to remove most of the applications that come with Ubuntu. I thought you were talking about more core components of Gnome like nautilus or metacity.

Thanks for the response. I didn't know that about ubuntu-desktop. I actually would like to use nautilus mixed with the right-click menu of xfce. I don't have the knowledge to setup a right click menu like xfce, in ubuntu.

Anyhow,

thanks!
