View Full Version : [ubuntu] Display Crashing

January 31st, 2010, 02:49 PM
Over the past day my system has been crashing.
Everything boots up as normal, however approx an hour in to the session the screen locks up and then becomes completely scrambled (looks similar to the loading screens on the old Spectrum computers - lots of tight horizontal lines).
At this point, the only thing I can do is power off and re-boot.
Until this incident, the install has been very stable.
If it helps I am using:

NVIDIA GeForce 7025 Graphics with Drive 185.18.36 installed
I have not noticed a trend in terms of performing a specific task etc to make this occur.

Appreciate any help in understanding what could be causing this and any fixes

Has your video card got sufficient cooling?

I had something similar happen in a windows box... twice. After two and a half years a capacitor would blow on the video card and the higher resolutions wouldn't work but booting into safe mode with low resolutions worked fine.
My suggestions is make sure the video card/case is cool and if it is easy make sure there is nothing wrong with the video card itself.

Thanks for this - all seems well in terms of the temperature. The case is very cool. Would you know if any kind of graphics card stress test exists for ubuntu so I can check the card itself out? Thanks
