This used to happen to me, however it only was fixed in the next release and I have not had the problem since. What is your GPU/Driver that you are running?

Are there any alternate drivers in Hardware Drivers (System -> Administration -> Hardware Drivers)?
I have heard with ATI your mileage may vary, though drivers are improving.

I am sorry I cannot be of much more help, I know that the problem was fixed in an update for me. I had a Nvidia GPU though..

the problem is caused by compiz's reflection plugin. disabling it makes the grey border not come up again
